1968 Superformance GT40
In 1968, Ford’s GT40, finished in the famous Gulf livery, won the 24 Hours of Le Mans, cementing the sports car’s place in racing history. Somehow, Ford did it—they beat Ferrari against all odds. Today, with few original examples available, companies like Superformance bring these legendary racecars back to life with high-quality replicas.
This Superformance GT40 is based on the 1968 Mk I GT40 and replicates the #9 car raced by Pedro Rodriguez and Lucien Bianchi. Our customer purchased the vehicle to fulfill his dream of owning a Gulf-liveried GT40. The crew at Downforce Motorsports found this used example, and we secured it for him.
Soon after the purchase, Tony and our owner took it to the Texas Mile, managing to hit 178 mph with the Roush 427 under the hood. Surprisingly, it normally takes around 700 horsepower to achieve that speed, but the GT40's aerodynamic prowess allowed it to cut through the wind and hit the mark with much less. That success sparked the idea of attempting a 200mph run.
We took the 427ci V8, already making mid-400 horsepower, and upgraded it with 20-degree AFR Renegade aluminum heads, an aggressive .692-lift Comp camshaft, an Edelbrock Super Victor aluminum intake, and a custom DaVinci carburetor. The engine now produces around 450 horsepower at the wheels. Despite unfavorable conditions, it reached 189 mph at the Texas Mile this year.
Hitting 200 mph will likely require about 750 horsepower, but we’re eager to give it another try.
